| About Chewy |
|
Chewy joined the rescue at 7 years old after spending his entire life with one owner. While he previously lived with a man, he is equally comfortable with women and forms strong, affectionate bonds with his people. Hes a loving, loyal companion who thrives on connection and gentle attention.
About Chewy
Chewy is a handsome sable male (mahogany or tri-factored), standing about 17 inches tall and weighing around 30 pounds. He recently had a small, benign skin tag removed from his lower eyelid to keep him comfortable, and hes doing well.
Personality & Behavior
Chewy is what many call a shadow doghe loves being close to his person. Whether youre moving around the house, relaxing, or even heading to another room, Chewy will quietly follow and settle nearby. He doesnt demand constant attention, but he finds comfort simply being with you.
He is fully house-trained and has a unique routine: he prefers to go outside on a leash, then waits for it to be removed before taking off to do his business. He enjoys having you outside with him and will happily run and play nearby, especially if theres a frisbee or tennis ball involved. Fetch is one of his favorite activitiesbut moderation is important, as too much running can leave him a bit sore later in the day.
Chewy also prefers not to be left alone outside and may bark to come back in. Indoors, he settles well and is not destructive.
Training & Habits
Chewy is leash-trained, though he can pull at times. With a martingale collar and consistent cues like no pull, he is improving. Due to his strength, hell do best with someone confident handling a dog on leash. He is cautious around cars and prefers to keep a safe distance from traffic.
He knows basic commands like come, sit, and find the frisbee/ball, and is highly motivated by treatsmaking further training very achievable.
Social Life
Chewy gets along well with other dogs and cats, though he may show mild jealousy if he feels hes not getting his fair share of attention. He enjoys toys but does best with durable ones, as he can quickly destroy softer toys to get to the squeaker.
Feeding & Health
When Chewy arrived, he was slightly overweight and used to free-feeding. With scheduled meals and a mix of kibble and Freshpet, hes already slimming down and eating more consistently.
Separation & Home Behavior
Chewy may bark briefly when left alone, but he settles after a few minutes and waits calmly for your return. He isnt destructive, though he may investigate accessible trashso secure bins are recommended.
Special Considerations
Chewy is sensitive when it comes to grooming and handling, likely due to rough experiences in the past. He does not like having his coat grabbed or being handled roughly and may react by snapping if uncomfortable. Because of this, he should be in a home without young children.
Gentle, patient grooming is keyworking in short sessions and even using a muzzle initially can help build trust. Veterinary evaluation found no underlying pain or joint issues; his sensitivity appears behavioral rather than physical.
Ideal Home
Chewy would thrive in a calm, adult home or one with older, respectful children. Hed be especially happy with someone who is home oftensuch as a retiree or remote workerwho can offer companionship and a steady routine. Hes the perfect match for someone looking for a loyal, close-by companion who will always be by their side.
If youre looking for a devoted, affectionate dog who will stick close and share your daily life, Chewy may be your perfect match.
