Every year, we bring in a few dogs here and there that test positive for an infection of
heartworms. Since May of this year, we have taken in seven dogs with
heartworms. One of those dogs, Flame, had to be
put to sleep in June due to
complications arising from her heartworm infection.
In memory of Flame, and to help us pay for treating dog with heartworms, we have
established the Flame Heartworm Treatment Fund. Treatment for heartworms, which
consists of an injection of an arsenic derivative, costs us between $175 and $200 per
dog. We have not declined to treat a heartworm-positive dog because of money, but the
number of treatments that we have paid for is beginning to stress our treasury.
It is important to keep in mind that treating a heartworm infection can only be part of getting
a dog healthy and ready for adoption. A dog with heartworms may also need to be spayed or
neutered and have its teeth cleaned in addition to being treated for heartworms.
We hope that you can make a donation to the Flame Heartworm Treatment Fund. All
donations to Triangle Sheltie Rescue are tax-deductible, and your donation could
save the life of a dog that still has a healthy and loving life ahead of it.
